As we know, Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season. This time of year can be very stressful on employees. It can take a toll on employee productivity and morale. As HR Professionals we need to make sure and help employees balance work / life demands that tend to way us down.
There are many ways HR can provide a little support that goes a long way:
1.) If you have an Employee Assistance Program or Chaplain service, remind employees that this service is available. In our hectic lives we tend to forget those benefits that we do not utilize on a daily basis.
2.) Create a Fun Committee. We have a fun committee that surprise the office on occasion and it really helps morale. The committee has brought in popsicles for everyone, donuts in the morning, and made hot chocolate on cold days made out of real chocolate. These small things really made a huge impact.
3.) Decorate the office. The office, in a lot of cases, is our home away from home. Just as we decorate our homes to celebrate the season, allow employees to do the same to their cubes or offices. So productivity is not lost, define a schedule of decorating hours.
4.) Be available. The end of the year can be a very busy time for HR Professionals. Paperwork can bog us down and prevent us from being more readily available when the employees need us. Give yourself a much needed break and walk around the office just to say hi to the employees and let them know you are still there for them.
Don’t forget that the holiday can be just as stressful on yourself as it can be on the employees. Remember to take time out for yourself and do those things that de-stress you. This will allow you to be at your best for the employees and your family will appreciate it too!
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
